Darwin
I've been saving an update for some good news. I stayed a day in Alice and visited the flying doctors, the school of the air and a reptile centre before joining a tour up to tropical Darwin. The tour was short and the driver was a bit of a dictator about us getting up stupidly early and leaving exactly on time which sucked the fun out of the tour somewhat. Visited Lichfield National Park and went swimming in various gorges with waterfalls and huge fruit bats which was fun. We also visited a hot spring which was lukewarm and smelt of eggs (sulphur). Anyway Darwin is so un-Australian, it's like Ibiza and Falaraki with tropical palm trees, buzzing nightlife and millions of backpackers. Unfortunately that means there's a lot of competition for a few jobs. You have to do a trial even for waitressing with as many as 6 people being tried out for 1 job! I worked a couple of 1 day events- a big horserace called the Darwin Cup and an AFL game (Aussie rules football) and I'v now got a bar job at a restaurant across the road from my hostel. I'm also washing sheets at my hostel in exchange for free accom so that's pretty cool as it's saving me a lot of money. Not done much in Darwin so far apart from the national park, I've visited the beach but you can't swim because of salties (salt water crocodiles) and been to the museum to see a big stuffed saltie called Sweetheart. Hoping to go on the crocodile jumping safari before I leave. On Thursday I'm going to th night market to sample local delicacies such as crocodile, emu and water buffalo. Kangaroo and camel are very tasty but I'm not sure they'd take off in England. Em xxx
